Brixton - Reggae, Riots & Biba Boots

A personal walk around London's most cosmopolitan "village"

Barrie your guide worked in Brixton for over twenty five years so he's perfectly suited to take you around this wonderful part of London - one that surprisingly still has an outdated reputation as a area to avoid.

On the walk you'll hear all about Brixton's rich history - from it's time as London's premier suburban shopping centre, to its transformation to one of London's great Caribbean and ethnic centres - and onto its current resurgence as a cool place to live, work and spend an evening.

Barrie will give you new insights on the infamous Brixton riots, he'll take you to see the shop his parents opened in 1937 and also tell you of the area's "golden days".

You'll visit a street that was immortalised in a number one hit single and a building that featured in Barrie's early years that certainly wasn't number one with him!

You'll also hear the histories of Brixton's many famous music venues - where they were and what they are now.

As well as Barrie's personal anecdotes, the tour will be illustrated by historic photographs which will help enhance your walk experience. Barrie has Brixton in his veins and he hopes his enthusiasm for the area will rub off on everyone who journeys with him on this walk. The cost of the tour is £10.00 payable on the day, starting outside Brixton tube station and finishing in close proximity to the area's excellent coffee bars and ethnic eateries, if you need sustenance after all that walking!
